Server Fixed

Monday, July 18th, 2005

The problem actually ended up being annoyingly more complicated. Unfamiliar with network details, I spent a good deal of time trying different network card configurations and kernels.

Eventually, my roommate took one look at the routing table and solved it within a minute. Hey, at least I learned something. If you have two NICs on the same subnet, they’ll have the same gateway, and the machine will get confused about which to use.

He fixed it with this hackish command (which I now run on startup):

route del default gw `route -n | grep '0.0.0.0' | grep eth1 | grep UG | awk '{print $2}'` eth1

This command looks for the extra routing gateway entry on eth1 and pipes it into “route del”, to remove it.

I’ve no idea why this suddenly started happening, and why it works fine on other machines I run, but whatever. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Server Faults

Downtime? Yup! With good timing, no less. Right after I finished a bunch of large updates to the AMX Mod X website, the forums start acting unbearably slow.

Thinking it was just a fluke, I came back to RI to spend some time with my family… and as soon as I arrive, the server’s dead. Fortunately, I was still able to shell into the server from another local machine, and spent a good two hours investigating the problem. My conclusion: a dead NIC (network card). Sigh.

Because the machine had two NICs (one for sourcemod.net and another for amxmodx.org), I could only keep one for the time being – and chose AMX Mod X (it’s currently much higher traffic). SourceMod is currently offloaded to a nearby machine that isn’t exactly a dedicated server, but will suffice.

So, expect more downtime for both sites as I repair the situation over the next few days and then move everything back on to the original machine.

Vacation

I’m going away for the July 4th weekend. I’ll be in New Hampshire, trying out our cool new Jet Skiis:

(That’s my youngest brother).

So, Happy Fourth of July to the Americans out there, and when I get back there will be a few upcoming events awaiting for the community (MM:S Fix-it release, AMX Mod X release, and hopefully some more goodies).
